Couples Communication

About Our Work

We have developed this work over the past several years in order to assist couples in communicating skillfully, authentically, and as partners rather than adversaries. In this way, potentially divisive issues can be addressed before they grow into separations, walls, or even divorces.

What we do is not therapy. Rather, we assist you in creating a neutral place from which to deal with issues together. We will assist you in identifying and interrupting your characteristic patterns of miscommunication.

Drawing from our own experiences of circle facilitation, mediation, and personal development training we will develop specific practices with you, in response to your particular circumstances and goals.

Why Do This?

Some couples do this work because of:

  • Experiences of being stuck, out of balance, misunderstood, not appreciated
  • Desire for a deeper sense of connection and cooperation
  • Uncertainty about the future of the relationship
  • Need for clarity in making decisions together

Some of the things you might want:

  • More fun and passion in your relationship
  • Increased willingness to put energy into the relationship
  • Skills for communicating together through stuck and difficult places

About Judy and David Rodman

Married at Pu'uhonua 'O Honaunau in 1987, Judy and David enjoy a loving and adventurous relationship. They have been mediators with West Hawaii Mediation Center since 1991, specializing in divorce and domestic mediation.

When they met in New York in 1984, Judy was the New York City Manager for the Loving Relationships Training, and David was an independent software designer. Their relationship has always been enlivened by the balance between art and science, relationships and business, inner and outer life. Over the years they have learned to appreciate their differences greatly, and they experience frequent role-reversals which are the source of much amusement as well as learning.

David has been the City Manager for Lifespring Honolulu and has served on the Board of Directors of the West Hawaii Mediation Center. He provides mediation and group effectiveness consultation and training services to business, schools and individuals.

Since moving to Hawaii, Judy has recaptured her early interest in art, becoming a successful ceramist with work in several galleries around town, and has served on the Board Of Directors of the Kailua Village Artists and the Society for Kona's Education and Art.

Judy and David have been trained in Basic and Domestic Mediation and Group Facilitation, and have designed and facilitated training programs in mediation, team building, and communication.
